Effective Pain Treatments near Phoenix

Epidural Injections

Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used to alleviate pain and inflammation in the spine. There are 3 ways to introduce this medication into the spine: interlaminar approach, transforaminal approach or caudal canal approach. During the procedure, a needle is inserted into the epidural space, which surrounds the spinal cord and nerves. This space is then injected with a combination of a corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic.
The corticosteroid, a potent anti-inflammatory medication, works to reduce swelling and inflammation around the affected nerves. This can help relieve pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. The local anesthetic provides immediate pain relief by numbing the area.
ESIs are performed under live fluoroscopic guidance, ensuring accurate needle placement. The procedure takes a short time and is usually done on an outpatient basis. While many patients experience significant pain relief following an ESI, the duration of relief varies. It's important to note that ESIs carry certain risks, such as infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or a temporary increase in pain. Consulting with your healthcare provider is crucial to determine if this treatment option is appropriate for your specific condition.
